Primary students love growing older and embrace the new skills each year brings. At Chesterfield Montessori School, Primary children celebrate their birthday in a very special way.
In order to help these young children better understand the concept of time, classmates sit in a circle around the birthday child, who lights a candle that represents the sun. He then walks around the “sun” holding a globe, which represents the rotation of the earth on its axis for each year of life, while his classmates sing “The Earth Goes Around the Sun.” After the first rotation, he shows a photo of himself at one year old. After the second, two years old and so on, until his current age.
Before the birthday celebration, the child has worked with his parents to choose photos that show him at each age. He also helps shop for the snack that will be shared with the class. Parents look forward to sharing this celebration with their child’s classroom community.
